Visitor Visa FAQs
Find answers to some of the most common questions about Canadian study and work permits. Click on any question below to view the answer.
1. How much money do I need to show for a Visitor Visa? There is no fixed minimum amount required by IRCC. You should demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your travel, accommodation, daily expenses, and return transportation while visiting Canada.
2. How long does Visitor Visa processing take? Processing times vary depending on your country of residence, application volume, and IRCC processing capacity. Current processing times are available on the IRCC website and are subject to change.
3. Can I extend my stay in Canada as a visitor? Yes. If you wish to remain in Canada longer than your authorized stay, you may apply for a Visitor Record before your current status expires. Applying early helps you maintain legal status while your application is being processed.
4. What is the difference between a Visitor Visa and a Visitor Record? A Visitor Visa allows you to travel to Canada and request entry at the border. A Visitor Record does not authorize travel but allows eligible visitors who are already in Canada to extend their legal stay.
5. What are the most common reasons a Visitor Visa is refused? Common reasons include insufficient financial evidence, weak ties to the home country, incomplete documentation, an unclear purpose of travel, inconsistencies in the application, or concerns that the applicant may not leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
6. Can I apply again after my Visitor Visa is refused? Yes. A previous refusal does not prevent you from submitting a new application. However, it is important to understand the reasons for the refusal and address those concerns with stronger supporting evidence before reapplying.
7. Do I need an invitation letter to apply for a Visitor Visa? An invitation letter is not always required, but it can strengthen your application when visiting family or friends in Canada. The letter should clearly explain the purpose of your visit and your relationship with the inviter.
8. Can my family apply together for Visitor Visas? Yes. Family members may apply together when traveling for the same purpose. Each applicant must still meet the eligibility requirements and provide supporting documents specific to their situation.
9. What should I do if my Visitor Visa expires while I am in Canada? Your Visitor Visa is used for travel to Canada. Your legal stay is determined by your visitor status after entry. If your authorized stay is about to expire, you should apply for a Visitor Record before your status expires if you wish to remain in Canada.
10. Can I convert my Visitor Visa into permanent residence? A Visitor Visa itself does not lead directly to permanent residence. However, depending on your circumstances, you may later qualify for immigration programs such as Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, or family sponsorship.
